Alfons Gallery’s annual exhibition of its collection of crèches from around the world is being presented from a new viewpoint.  Created by local and global artisans and brought here by sisters from our various missions, they reflect School Sisters of St. Francis’ global outreach.  This year certain of these crèches have been chosen to support the presentation of seasonal stitcheries created by S. Helena Steffensmeier.  Her large-scale hangings are composed of intricately-sewn lines with a calligraphic feel, and the shapes she created with various sizes and colors of yarn have a painterly touch.  S. Helena’s distinctive marks in thread also attach cloth pieces, pulling together image and concept to create elaborate statements celebrating this joyful holiday season.

Accompanying these stitcheries are other artworks in various mediums by School Sisters of St. Francis artists from our vast collection, which includes paintings dating back to the late 19th century.
